Highlights to explore

Nairobi is in many ways both a charming and peculiar city‚ all wrapped in one. In addition to its urban core‚ the city has Nairobi National Park‚ a large game reserve known for breeding endangered black rhinos and home to giraffes‚ zebras and lions. Next to it‚ the famous and well-regarded elephant orphanage operated by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Nairobi is also often used as a jumping-off point for safari trips elsewhere in Kenya.

Travel Information

1. For fresh food and great prices in Nairobi visit the open-air markets around the city. The market is Kenya’s largest flea market situated a short matatu ride from the city centre. It offers affordable second-hand clothing‚ furniture‚ accessories‚ books‚ hardware‚ fresh produce and processed materials.

2. A matatu (public minibuses/commuter buses) is typically used for traveling between downtown Nairobi and the suburbs. They are the most common form of public transport and provide a cheap way of getting around Nairobi.

3. Nairobi has a vibrant and growing social scene catering for a wide variety of clientele.The city has seen a rise in the number of new entertainment spots popping up in different parts of the city as a growing middle class feeds the demand for entertainment. The most popular are open all week but are most active on Friday’s and Saturday’s when Nairobians seek to get a break from the busy week.

 

To the west lies Serengeti National Park‚ home to wildlife including lions‚ rhinoceros‚ giraffes and leopards. Annual migrations feature huge herds of wildebeests crossing its plains.
