Kigali International Airport
Kigali is the capital city of Rwanda‚ roughly in the center of the country. It sprawls across numerous hills‚ ridges and valleys‚ and has a vibrant restaurant and nightlife scene. The Kigali Genocide Memorial documents the 1994 mass killings in Rwanda‚ associated with the country’s civil war. The city’s Caplaki Crafts Village has stalls selling traditional handicrafts‚ including woodcarvings and woven baskets.
Rwanda is endowed with natural resources such as the Agakera National Park‚ the Volcanoes National Park and the Nyungwe forest. The country is home to the Mountain Gorilla‚ 670 bird species and greatest diversity of large animals.
1. The mountain gorillas are the prime attraction in Volcanoes National park with gorilla trekking happening all year round. Because of the high altitude it is generally cold‚ especially early morning and the evenings‚ you are advised to carry a light sweater. The park is located in the north of Rwanda 2 hours from Kigali.
2. Mountain gorillas were the subject of the late Dian Fossey who dedicated her life to their protection and conservation. Dian Fossey carried out research on mountain gorillas at the Karisoke Research Centre in Volcanoes National Park. Much of her work is portrayed in the international acclaimed film “Gorillas in the Mist” which was shot in Volcanoes National Park.
3. Visitors are asked to maintain 7m from gorillas. If you are sick with cold‚ flu or other contagious illness‚ please do not visit the gorillas. Should you need to cough‚ cover your mouth and turn away from the gorillas.
4. Carry long trousers and long sleeved shirts‚ sun hut‚ insect repellent‚ sunscreen‚ rain pocho and waterproof hiking boots.
5. When with gorillas‚ keep your voice low and try not to make rapid movement that may frighten the gorillas.
To the west lies Serengeti National Park‚ home to wildlife including lions‚ rhinoceros‚ giraffes and leopards. Annual migrations feature huge herds of wildebeests crossing its plains.
